ATS Friendly Resume Format — The Complete Guide

An ATS-friendly resume format can be the difference between getting an interview and getting ignored. Here's exactly what works.

File Format: DOCX is the most ATS-compatible format. While PDFs work with modern ATS, older systems still struggle with them. When in doubt, use DOCX.

Font: Use standard fonts that ATS can read: Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, or Helvetica. Avoid decorative fonts, script fonts, or unusual typefaces.

Layout: Use a single-column layout. Multi-column layouts confuse ATS parsers, which read left-to-right and may jumble your content.

Section Headers: Use standard headers that ATS can recognize: 'Professional Summary', 'Experience', 'Work History', 'Education', 'Skills', 'Certifications'. Avoid creative headers like 'Where I've Worked' or 'My Toolbox'.

Bullet Points: Use standard bullet characters (•, -, *) rather than custom icons or emojis. Keep bullets consistent in style.

File Name: Name your file professionally: 'YourName_Resume.docx' not 'resume_final_v3.docx'.

Length: 1-2 pages is ideal for most roles. Senior positions may warrant 2 pages, but rarely more.

Graphics: Avoid charts, graphs, images, and icons. ATS cannot read them and they may cause parsing errors.

Contact Information: Put your name, phone, email, and LinkedIn at the top in a standard format. Avoid putting contact info in headers or footers — some ATS miss those.
