Federal Resume Guide — How to Write a Government Resume

Federal resumes are different from private sector resumes. Here's how to write one that passes federal HR review.

Length: Federal resumes are typically 3-5 pages. They require more detail than private sector resumes.

Format: Use the USAJOBS resume builder or a federal-format template. Include all required fields.

Required Information: Full name, contact info, SSN (last 4 digits), citizenship, veterans preference, federal employment status.

Work Experience: For each position, include: job title, series/grade, employer name and address, supervisor name and phone, start/end dates, hours per week, salary, and detailed duties.

KSAs: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities statements may be required. Write 1-2 paragraphs for each KSA with specific examples.

Education: Include all degrees, institutions, graduation dates, GPA (if 3.0+), and relevant coursework.

Keywords: Federal job postings have specific keywords. Match them exactly in your resume.

Veterans Preference: If eligible, include your veterans preference points and DD-214 information.

Pro tip: Federal resumes require extreme attention to detail. Consider using a tool to help format and organize your content.
