Resume Red Flags Recruiters Look For — and How to Fix Them
Recruiters scan for red flags that signal risk. Knowing what they are lets you address them before applying.
Job hopping (3+ roles under a year each): frame with a brief reason or show increasing responsibility. If it's a real pattern, address it in interviews honestly.
Employment gaps: don't leave them blank. Add context: upskilling, freelance, caregiving, or travel.
Typos and inconsistencies: one error can undo the rest. Triple-check dates, titles, and company names.
Vague, duty-based bullets: 'Responsible for...' signals a passive employee. Rewrite with verbs and results.
Missing dates or fuzzy timelines: recruiters suspect hiding. Provide clear months/years.
Generic objective or clichés: 'Results-oriented team player' adds nothing. Replace with a metrics-driven summary.
Overly long resumes: 4+ pages suggest you can't prioritize. Cut ruthlessly.
Mismatched skills vs experience: if skills say 'AWS' but no bullet mentions it, it looks like keyword padding.
Wrong information: incorrect company name or job title is a fast reject.
Formatting that breaks ATS: no one reads a resume the parser can't read.
The fix for every flag: be transparent, be specific, and lead with results.
